Expansion? In MY NHL? It’s More Likely Than You’d Think

by Derek Roessler •  Aug 27, 2014  •  0 comments

The rumor of expansion/relocation in the NHL has been around for as long as the Coyotes have struggled to draw fans. But yesterday, in the waning days of August, these persistent rumors picked up steam and everything else in their path, Katamari style.  Supposedly, it's a "done deal" that there will be a team in Las Vegas and one in Seattle won't be far behind. By 2017, we could be looking at a 32 team league, with Quebec and a second Toronto-area team joining the mix. Whew!Bettman's Vegas Wonderland

2014 Playoff Predictions: Round 2

by Derek Roessler •  May 1, 2014  •  0 comments

Holy shitsnacks, what a first round! Three game 7's on the same night, Montreal stomped a mudhole in Tampa, the Blues pulled a Greg Norman, Columbus' 5th line did all they could, and San Jose remembered it's the playoffs. If you're a hockey fan, I don't know what else you could ask for (aside from your team winning the cup, but that's so obvious, why would you even mention that). After going 7-for-8 in the first round (thank you, thank you), I'm tied with Mike Solarte atop the Section328 Bracket Challenge.  At least I didn't go crazy like so many and pick the Sharks to go all the way. So we're down to 8 teams now: Bruins-Habs and Penguins-Rangers in the east; Wild-Blackhawks and Ducks-Kings out west. And it all starts tonight. Can't wait! Round 2 predictions after the jump.Ryan Suter leads all skaters with an average of 54:25 TOI/gm. (not confirmed)

2014 Playoff Predictions: Round 1

by Derek Roessler •  Apr 16, 2014  •  0 comments

Based on how poorly I predicted the Hurricanes season (I picked them to make the playoffs, when will I learn?), I'm going to predict playoffs one round at a time in an effort to minimize my losses. Despite the Hurricanes not being in the postseason, a lot of these matchups look like fun, and we'll get to hear the dulcet tones of John Forslund on national broadcases, so at least there's that.  And now it's time for a breakdown.

What’s Wrong With Russia (and other Olympic thoughts)

by Derek Roessler •  Feb 20, 2014  •  0 comments

On Wednesday, the hockey world was stunned when Russia fell to Finland by a 3-1 margin. On the surface, Russia is one of the powers of the hockey world. Hell, they (well, the Soviets) won gold 6 out of 7 Olympics, and won silver the other time. But that was a long time ago, and while reality has changed, the perception is dragging. Yesterday's loss makes it now 3 straight games in which the Russian team will go home empty handed, and now 6 straight without capturing the gold. So what gives!?
