Well, that was a fun week.

A four game homestand that begin last Tuesday resulted in eight points for the Hurricanes and has the team one point outside of the final Wild Card slot in the Eastern Conference. Wins over Boston, Columbus, Buffalo, and the New York Islanders had PNC Arena rocking and the team was feeling the energy. The Canes skated with energy and passion (usually in the final 2 periods, but we’ll forget that part) and they found ways to get the puck in the net while denying their opponents the same. While the entire week was one beautifully bright ray of sunshine, I still need to call-out just a few of the players who made things even brighter.

1 – Brock McGinn

NHL Third Star of the Week.

Sportsnet Rookie of the Week.

Yeah, he did good.

In the last three games, McGinn has racked up seven points. Tallying 4 goals and 3 assists, Brock has awoken and become a key part of our offensive presence. His physicality on the ice allows him the ability to make space for himself and the puck. He is very hot right now, and the Canes need to continue to give him the time on the ice to flourish.

Remember his first shift in his first NHL game in Detroit? Remember that goal? We knew he would be special then, and since his call up on November 11th, he’s been a pivotal part of this team. I don’t want to put the pressure on him of saying, “I expect big things,” but this kid only getting better and we’re going to get plenty of big things from him in the future.

2 – Elias Lindholm

Part of the reason Brock McGinn has been surging is due to the reemergence of Elias Lindholm. Coming off a five-game absence, he has been a part of our offensive strength. The line of McGinn-Staal-Lindholm has been incredibly strong as of late. Lindy has put up 5 points in the last 3. Lindholm has been moving the puck well for his partners and has been rewarded with four assists during his point streak. He seems to be fully back in the groove, and it couldn’t come at a better time as the Canes battle for a Wild Card spot.

3 – Jeff Skinner

Jeff seems to have restocked on chocolate milk, and it’s given him all the energy he needs to be a strong force for the Canes. He had been quiet for a while, but he woke up on Tuesday night posting 3 points (1 g, 2 a) against Columbus and the following it up with another 3 point night (2 g, 1 a) against Buffalo on Friday. His tenacity to get the puck through traffic and take as many chances as he can get has been rewarded this week.

Honorable Mention: Home Ice Advantage

With the exception of last Sunday (thanks, snow), PNC Arena has come to life recently. The building is packed. The fans are loud. It is exciting to be in the bowl each gameday. Keep showing up, Caniacs. We’re giving this team the edge they need. Continue to #PackthePNC

Two road games in Columbus and a Friday night showdown against the reigning champions lie ahead, so they next few days are going to be a very good test for this team. Let’s hope the sun keeps shining, and the Hurricanes keep winning!
