Canes Close Out Season Series Over Detroit

by Derek Roessler •  Oct 28, 2015  •  2 comments

Despite this being just the ninth game of the season, it was the third and final meeting between the Hurricanes and Red Wings. Thanks, NHL scheduling wizards! Since Carolina was playing Detroit, there was also an opportunity for the good guys to score more than 2 goals in the game. You can do it, put your back into it.The big early story of the day was that rookie sensation (but should Carolina keep him up?) Noah FREAKIN' Hanifin would be a healthy scratch at the Joe Louis Arena. As was stated on the broadcast, this was not a penalizing scratch, but an opportunity to give Noah a different look at the game now that he has 8 games of NHL experience under his belt. Look for him to jump back into the lineup on Thursday.

Quantity Over Quality Dooms Canes

Stop me if you've heard this before, but the Canes lost a game in which they outshot their opponent by a healthy margin.  In episode 2 of #CanesAfterDark, Carolina fired more pucks on net than did the Kings in all 3 periods, and after 60 minutes wrapped up, not a single one changed the 0 on the good side of the scoreboard. This marks 132 consecutive regulation minutes without a goal. For those tracking at home, that's not good.

As part of the Canes annual Tour of North America While The NC State Fair Is In Town ™, the boys in red and white play several games in times zones that make it a late night for us here on the east coast. Luckily for us, we have cold, smooth adult beverages to get us through the waning hours. The #Redvolution set up shop in Denver last night, and even Patrick Roy's beard was converting.Beards should be one color, sir.

Well, That Was a Weekend!

Starting this past Friday, or Thursday if you want to get technical about it, the Canes hit the road for their annual tour of North America While The NC State Fair Is In Town ™.  Prior to packing their bags for Detroit, the team looked flatter than Stanley against Florida, and a jolt of energy was most certainly needed. That jolt came in the form of the 6 foot, 185 pound forward better known as OUR CLIENT, BRRRROOCK MCGINN!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxdI62CJN2w

Pump the Brakes, It’s Only October 14th

In lieu of my traditional game recaps, this one is going to be far more editorialized based on what I read on Twitter and various other corners of the internets (yes, all of them) during and after last night's 4-1 loss to the Panthers.Eddie Lack made his Hurricanes debut last night, and the boys in front of him were kind enough to make sure it wasn't a boring start. In the first 2:01 of the game, Lack faced several shots and gave up a goal to a COMPLETELY uncovered Nick Bjugstad. Here's the thing about Bjugstad: he's 6'6" and well over 200 pounds, and that should, in theory, make him hard to miss. Of all places to leave a guy of that size, not to mention skill, the slot is probably the worst option. Woof.

Canes vs. Preds 10/8 Game Recap

by Derek Roessler •  Oct 9, 2015  •  0 comments

After a long (see: starting in April) offseason, the Carolina Hurricanes were back on the ice in a game that actually counts in the standings. The stink of last season has been mostly shed, and it feels great to be genuinely excited to watch some Canes hockey once again. Now, let's get a damn win in October this year!Oh. Shit. Under a minute into the game, Jordan Staal was booked for high-sticking Ryan Ellis, giving Nashville an early power play opportunity. Wouldn't you know it, they cashed in on the man advantage thanks to a deflected shot that beat Cam Ward through the five-hole. That, unfortunately was not the worst thing about the first 5 minutes of the game.

Canes vs. Wild 3/6 Recap: Hope You Like GIFs

Last night's "effort," if you could call it that was simply terrible. Not only was coach Peters vocal about his displeasure, but it also has taken most of my will to write about it away. In lieu of my typical recap (which is always great, right? - actually, don't answer that), I hope this series of GIFs will serve as a timeline of my emotions and thoughts as the game went along. Enjoy!Yesterday was sunny, albeit cold, but sunny nonetheless. And there was hockey, which is usually good.

Canes vs. Capitals 2/27 Recap: Now With 50% Less Andrejs!

Since the Canes last took the ice on Tuesday, they've made a couple roster moves that perhaps you've heard about. With half of the top defensive pairing gone, how would Faulk and his new partner play? Now that Tlusty is in Winnipeg, who would fill his constantly changing role? Would Cam Ward turn heel and smash the silver stick over Francis' back and reveal a San Jose jersey? All these questions and more would be answered slightly after 7pm Friday night in the PNC Arena!Cam did not turn heel.
